Springwater P.P. is located on 1331 Route 26 in Midhurst (a suburb of Barrie), ON. The park has interesting waterfowl and migratory bird species. The park is run by the Beausoliel First Nation. We visited this park on the May Long Weekend, 2024.
The park's land was originally a tree nursery known as the Midhurst Forest. The nursery was owned by the province after 1922. The park was first opened to the public as the nursery in 1927, and opened as a park with full facilities in 1930. It wasn't officially an operating provincial park until 1958, however. In 2015, the Beausoleil First Nation signed a deal with Ontario Parks to manage the park.
The park's name simply comes from what the park has an abundance of - water from springs - springwater.
The activities at Springwater are:
- birdwatching for unique waterfowl and avian
- skiing through the trails in winter
The only *still maintained* trail:
- Red Trail 5km easy; this trail goes through a peaceful forest and passes over beautiful brooks and springs.
Turning into the park, you'll see an empty fee collection station. You must go right from there and continue to the decommissioned park store and washroom (a running theme is the "decommissions", which occured after 2015). Continue straight to the parking lot #6 and enter the trail. Park map below.
Avoid this park unless you have ambitions to visit them all. It sucks.
Advice for Ontario Parks - get this park back! It used to be full and interesting and beautiful but it is now run down and disgusting! Restore it to its former glory! Either the Ontario Parks or the Beausoliel should truly do something about this park.
Worst provincial park I've ever visited. I've seen pre-2015 pictures and they are GORGEOUS. I'm reminiscing for something I didn't experience. A 1.3/10.
