Conestoga Family Campgrounds is located at 8772 Concession Rd. 9, in Moorefield, ON. It is sat upon the Mallet River, and the so-called Lake Rotten Ralph, pictured above. The park features numerous amenities, including a pool, splash pad, jumping pillow, novelty mini putt, sports courts, and more. This park does not usually offer overnight camping, but we were able to in June 2025.
The Barrett Family were first introduced to camping when Rotten Ralph Barrett purchased and renovated a bread truck to transform it into a campervan. Eventually they upgraded to a Winnebago and travelled around the province for years. Ralph retired in the mid-80s, so they purchased Conestoga Family Campground in April 1987, because it was "something we have always wanted to do". Since then, the park has more than doubled in size. This is sourced from here.
"Conestoga" is used to describe a type of wagon that originated in Pennsylvania. A nearby town was named after said mode of transportation, and this town was known as "Conestogo", spelt differently. The reason for this spelling is simply because everyone was illiterate and writing was not an essential part of life in those days. And thus, this park was named correctly, and the town was not.
Conestoga Family Campgrounds offer:
- large heated pool (see left)
- fishing/paddling/swimming on a large spring-fed lake
- 18 hole miniature golf (see SPOTLIGHT)
- 2 large playgrounds near the centre of the park
- splash pad beside the pool
- extra large jumping pillow (behind the pool on left)
- horseshoe pits
- sports equipment/paddle boat rentals
There are no hiking trails.
Drive past the gates. To your left is the entire main section containing a majority of the aforementioned amenties. To your right is the Cedars area, and to your left is Willows. Continue straight past Rotten Ralph Lake and Mallet River, and you'll arrive at the so-called "big hill". All overnight campsites are to the left, as are many seasonals. If you were to go up the hill, you'd see more seasonals before ending at the wilderness/tent camping area.
Note that the photos in this section are not explicitly from this park, they are good photos of species that live here.
Wildflowers
Weeping willows
Beavers that annually build dams that flood the park
Frogs
Visit every amenity.
Fish in the smaller ponds just west of the large lake - they often have more fish.
The only way to book overnight sites is if you know someone in the park.
All of the overnight sites are near each other. "Barn" is easy to back into, but very sunny. "Island" may be a harder park but is a nicer site.
For just $5, you can play one of the most interesting mini golf courses I've ever seen. Canyon Falls is located right beside the park store and is themed like a ghost town in the middle of the desert. The greens are kept in a decent condition but the real highlight is just the hole layout. These holes are actually challenging, mostly because they're par 2s.
I actually enjoyed the course substantially, and I hope you try it out if you visit.
This is a pretty cool park. There's stuff to do, and it's only an hour from Toronto. Some stuff is still old-fashioned, but this is counterbalanced by the many unique amenities, like the jumping pillow. It's a nice park. Maybe a 7 or 8.
