Long Point P.P. is located on 350 Erie Blvd. in Port Rowan, ON. The park is on a 40km long peninsula and is known for having world-renowned, Caribbean-esque beaches. We most recently visited in September 2023.
Long Point's land was first under provincial control in 1921, making it the 4th oldest provincial park. After the selling of some cottage lots, the park's system was reformed in 1955 as a result of the Provincial Parks Act, making the selling of lands on provincial park property illegal.
The name "Long Point" is about as obvious as they come - a 40km peninsula in Lake Erie is a long point, indeed.
Long Point offers:
- swimming on the world renowned beaches
- canoeing in the marsh
- birding for over 300 different species
- fishing from the boat launch/dock
There are no hiking trails at Long Point.
*NOTE THAT COTTONWOOD (Old Park) CAMPGROUND IS SEPARATE FROM THE SECTION DESCRIBED*
After passing the park sign, you'll see a fork in the road and a store on your left. Turn right for day use, straight for campground. You'll pass the boat launch and see a vast marsh on the left and a campground on the right. Continue straight until met at a crossroad. Left for Turtle Dunes, right for Firefly and Monarch's Rest. There are plenty of dune crossings/beach access points in all 4 campgrounds.
Walk down the beach into Long Point National Wildlife Area. It has cool red sands and great birding opportunities.
Have a beach day.
Only cross at designated dune crossings (this isn't advice, this is a rule, by the way).
Prefer to book in New Park Campground - Cottonwood's basically a different campground.
This park is great for the beach, but I'm not a beach guy. Parks like this where it's only beach are relatively boring for me, but this one is okay. The beach is magnificent, don't get me wrong - it's just not my thing. And the lacks of trails annoys me. They could do an awesome marsh boardwalk that would appease to birders (which are a large group in this park). For these reasons, 5.7/10.
