Forks of the Credit P.P. is located on 17760 McLaren Rd in Caledon, ON. The park is on the Credit River and features a section of the Bruce Trail which runs from Niagara Falls to Tobermory. I have visited this park most recently in May 2024.
Even before the government involvement in Forks of the Credit, locals always believed there should be a provincial or national park at the Forks. And in 1968, the Ontario government said "your wish is my command", and made Forks of the Credit one of the operating Ontario provincial parks. This had come after a study of the Niagara Escarpment earlier that year. A cool anecdote is that the park still has 21 acres that is owned by the government but is not park of the provincial park despite it serving the same purpose.
The name "forks of the credit" refers to how the Credit River splits and meanders inside the park and the surrounding area.
Forks of the Credit has some activities like:
- fishing for brown and brook trout
- cross country skiing in the wintertimes
- biking on the bike-safe trails
- horseback riding, if you're into that
The best trails are:
- Meadow Trail ~2km moderate; walk the top of a bluff before taking the stairs down to the cascading waterfall that defines the park.
- Dominion Trail ~2km easy; walk along the beautiful Credit River underneath the bluff the Meadow Trail is on top of.
(sorry for the sideways images - it's due to a Google Sites glitch; apologies)
As soon as you enter the park, you'll notice the lack of park office. To enter this park, you must go online, reserve a day-use permit, and scan it against the red and white gate. After this, you'll park your car beside a nice view and enter the trail. Washrooms on the left of the trailhead, map kiosk on the right. Look at the map supplied at the bottom of the page or the tips and advice section for trail route ideas.
Perfect for winter day trips.
Go on a weekday - this place is a zoo on Saturdays of summer.
Take the Meadow Trail to the falls, take the Dominion Trail along the river until the Bruce Trail cutoff that returns up a giant "staircase" if you can call it that.
Bring a good-quality zoom lens camera. After severe erosion, the park has made it illegal to go down to the falls, only allowing gazing from afar.
The most beautiful place in Peel Region. The falls are beautiful. Unfortunate that there is no easier access points anymore, but the views are still incredible. Would 100% go again in winter. An 8.2/10.
