Lake St. Peter P.P. is located on 356 Lake St. Peter Rd. in the town of the same name. The park is located atop a peninsula (surprisingly) on Lake St. Peter. We visited in September 2023.
Up until 1942, Lake St. Peter was a boy scout camp owned by an American company. After it closed because of funding defecits, the park was reopened as a resort, known as Komewa Inn. Eventually, the Ministry of Natural Resources established the land as crownland. After attracting many backcountry campers for unorganized camping, the government decided to provincial park-ify this place for the enjoyment of all (and so they could make money off of it).
The lake is named after Saint Peter, Christian founder of the Church of Rome and the Church of Antioch. He was one of the 12 disciples and was a major figure in the spreading of Christianity in not only Europe, but worldwide.
The amenities offered at Lake St. Peter are:
- swimming on two sandy beaches
- canoeing in the marshland/lake
- motorboating from the boat launch
- fishing for bass and trout
- hunting on the northern side of the park
- lots of perching birds and herons to see
The two trails are:
- Lookout Trail 2.5km moderate; this wooded trail leads to the lookout on the left. Note that it is a bit overgrown.
- Cabin Trail 1.5km moderate; this add-on to the Lookout Trail goes to an abandoned cabin, rumoured to belong to "Old Joe".
After entering the park, the store will be on the left, main/day-use beach on the right. Continue driving to see sites on both sides of the road. You will then see a small, wooded area and a small bay on the left which will often have anglers and canoeists inside. After a curve, you'll arrive at the camper's beach (if you kept straight) and the boat launch straight ahead. Please note that the hiking trails are on the opposite side of the road from the main part of the park. See the map supplied below for more details.
Visit Bancroft's Eagle's Nest Park (image below). Great lookout views that are accessible for almost everyone.
Book a site in the top (peninsula) loop of the park. Beach and boat launch access readily available.
Make this park a short-weekend trip or a stop-over - it's very small.
Stop at West Pines Campground for some ice cream - get moose tracks flavoured.
Very small park on a very scenic peninsula. Not too much going on, though - a solid 6.5/10 for me.
This is Eagle's Nest Park - approximately 30 minutes from the park.
